"I first visited Spring Island by boat as the bridge had not yet been built. There was only one house on the island and a developer’s vision to build a community within nature. The trip around the island that day was nothing short of breathtaking. The beauty and serenity of the low country speaks for itself and Spring Island is its crowning jewel. Of course I was skeptical that you could build a community on the island without disturbing the natural beauty of the island. I now have lived on the island for fifteen years and can say that the extraordinary beauty and abundance of nature still overwhelms me every time I come onto the island. I spend enormous amount of time outdoors primarily fishing, shrimping, boating etc. and Spring Island stands out as a beacon and a testimonial that you can indeed cohabitate with nature. Bravo Spring Island!"

"Mrs. Agnew and I were among the early arrivals at Spring Island, first visiting the island in July, 1993.  Our visit was the result of inquires I had made about Haig Point, which was one of the many places we had visited on the east coast ranging from Wilmington, NC to Jacksonville, Florida.  Back in those days we had also looked at a number of developing second home communities in the west, including Sun Valley, the whole Phoenix area and Tuscon.

When inquiring about Haig Point, which was developed by International Paper, we learned about Spring Island which was in its infancy.  It was enough to schedule a visit and when we came across the newly completed causeway, we looked at one another with a very special feeling.  We thought that maybe we had found what we were looking for.

Back in 1993, the golf course was in its first year.  We stayed at the Walker House and slowly bought into the "dream" of Jim and Betsy Chaffin.  I don't imagine that many dreams like that actually come true, but I can say without hesitation or reservation that the Spring Island dream not only came true, but it did so in a way that exceeded our expectations.   We bought a lot before the end of the year.   At age 60 and not knowing how many years we might have to enjoy our retirement, we started the process of building a house.  In those days it took less than two years from start to finish, and we had to give directions to everyone we were dealing with because there were so few houses on what is a pretty big island.

The natural beauty of Spring Island was nearly overwhelming, and I can say that today, after the addition of nearly 250 homes to what there were at the time, it doesn't look, or feel, very different.   We bonded with nearly everyone we met, and for many years, knew just about everyone on the island..  We believe the "feel" of Spring Island is very much the same today.  But there is one very big and important difference.  One no longer has to buy into a dream.  The dream has come true. It exists.  What may have been a huge risk in the mid-90s is no longer the case.  It exists.

To sum up our feelings about Spring Island.  Both Penny and I believe that our decision to make Spring Island a part of our lives (It is now, after 16 years, our principal residence) was among the very best decisions we have made in our 48 years of married life."

"My first visit to Spring Island was to play Old Tabby Links with some friends.  I was immediately struck by the natural beauty of the place.  Importantly, while I am an avid golfer, I was not interested in living in a community which might be dominated by a golf  course - Spring Island provides that in spades. There is an amazing array of amenities for such a small number of members.

Having been part of this community for almost fifteen years now, what continues to impress me is the interesting array of backgrounds of my fellow members.  It is important to note that whatever one has accomplished in life before crossing the causeway to Spring Island is essentially irrelevant. We are all here to enjoy all types of pursuits with little or no fanfare, it is a rare commodity."

"We chose Spring Island because of its natural beauty and location near the cultural cities of Beaufort, Savannah and Charleston.  Although the golf course is top ranked, which appealed to Mike, I had no interest in the sport, being an enthusiastic tennis player and never having played golf.    After a few years of enjoying Spring Island's active tennis program, the varied nature and arts activities and settling in the South, a friend nudged me to the new "never ever" golf clinics run by a new golf pro every Tuesday.  Well, the rest is history.  I got hooked on the game through the pro's innovative teaching and the camaraderie of the group.  It is wonderful to learn something new at 60!   I can't imagine a better place to learn golf than at Spring Island - with a golf course that is rarely crowded, there is a relaxed atmosphere to play and practice.  I've actually broken 100!    Spring Island is a wonderful place to try something new and there are many stories like mine in the other activities - whether it be painting, hunting, nature, the gym, tennis or fishing, there is a chance to get started.  I went to the art camp here last year for "never evers" and I might try becoming a watercolorist next!"
