Savannah, Georgia

Established in 1733, Savannah was once the capitol of Georgia and a bustling port, famed for exporting cotton. Always a city of culture – both high and low – its 18th and 19th century homes and buildings reflect a variety of architectural styles.  In a study published by the Savannah Historic Foundation, more than 40 percent of 2,500 buildings inventoried had architectural or historical significance. The city’s National Historic Landmark District is one of the largest in the country.

Once known as the “Hostess City of the South,” Savannah, Georgia – just 45 minutes from Spring Island – is widely celebrated for its historic charm and southern hospitality. Jon Berendt piqued the world’s interest in this colorful city with his international bestseller, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” which later became a movie filmed there. In fact, over the years, the city has been the setting of some of cinema’s most memorable achievements: “Forrest Gump,” “Glory,” and “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” just to name a few. Hollywood loves Savannah because its beautiful Historic District and lush Lowcountry landscape combine to create an instant movie set.

Today, Savannah has something for everyone: walking tours, buggy and bus tours, fabulous shopping, and easy access to its beaches, rivers and marshes. The Telfair Museum and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) add energy and diversity to the elegant historic district.
